Kopi Luwak Coffee!
On Sunday I posted my opinion on Morning Breakfast coffee and to be honest it was pretty average across the board. So I thought I needed to treat myself to a more expensive and rewarding coffee (The pain I go through for this blog!).For most of you that don’t know what Kopi Luwak coffee is, I’m going to explain. Kopi Luwak is the coffee bean that is produced when a Civet cat has eaten the coffee berry, this berry makes its way through the civet cats digestive track, breaking down and refining the bean within the berry before being defecated out, this bean is then washed and roasted for use. An added note, this is also the world’s most expensive coffee! To put it in perspective for you, Morning Breakfast was £5 odds for 250g, Kopi Luwak equals out at around £20 for 100g. Expensive right! To stretch it a bit more, if you could buy this at your local Costa or Starbucks it would cost you on average around £20 - £50 per cup. Expensive Right!
Now that you know about Kopi Luwak, Il give you my opinion on the world’s apparently best and most expensive coffee.
Unlike Morning Breakfast coffee this isn’t your Average Joe of coffee, this is the Star Wars of coffee, it is amazing, beautiful and appreciated by all for its glory and wonder, but yet it is not perfect and there for open to criticism (Han shot first!). This coffee is amazing and is absolutely beautiful but yet I feel that it has been hyped to the point that when you try it, you make yourself love it a lot more than you should, because you’re expected to.
Getting down to the nitty gritty of it. The coffee starts of perfect, every time you take a sip you can feel and taste how smooth the coffee is, the full quality taste of the coffee is there. You can taste every aspect and layer of the coffee, there is very little to no bitterness that distorts or interrupts your enjoyment, and this is where it makes its stand as the best coffee.
The aroma from opening the bag is powerful, your senses are fulfilled with the smell of this coffee. From the moment you open the bag to the moment you finish it, the smell that radiates from this coffee lingers within the ground beans and the bag. Although that is where it stops, the coffee once the water is added and the ground coffee is filtered stops radiating this powerful smell and in turn replaces it with a much more subtle smell (yet still inviting).
I’ve rambled on enough, now let’s hear it from the BEANS!
Bitterness - 5 out of 5 Beans
Richness - 5 out of 5 Beans
Aroma - 3 out of 5 Beans
